Castrated As A Child, He Reached Africa Leading A Fleet Before Columbus — Zheng He

Picture the scene: fourteen oh five, the river at Nanjing covered with enormous hulls, fleets that dwarfed the European ships of the age. And at their head, Zheng He, a man taken as a spoil of war and castrated as a child, now an admiral commanding thousands. With that force he reached the shores of Africa decades before Columbus even dreamed of crossing an ocean.
What still turns in our minds here at ORIGINS is what came after: the very empire that built all of this chose to halt it and turn inward. There is no single explanation, and that is where the richness lies.
Had you been in that court, with the protecting emperor already dead, would you have spent the treasury on continuing to sail distant seas, or poured it into the troubles at home?
