Few names carry as much weight as that of La Malinche. Five centuries later, to say "malinchismo" is still an accusation, and yet almost no one stops to look at the woman behind it: a girl handed over as a slave, first by her own people and then by the Spanish, who ended up being the only bridge between two worlds that did not share a single word.

There lies the discomfort. Every sentence she translated had enormous consequences, yet she never chose the language she spoke, nor the side to which she was sold. To call her a traitor assumes she owed something to someone.

And that is precisely the question she leaves us with: can a woman betray Mexico when she was enslaved by the very peoples who judge her today, or are we demanding loyalty on a debt she never incurred?
